People with mental illnesses and other psychiatric concerns need support in different aspects of their lives, including work, living, social, and learning environments. We can help these individuals manage symptoms and improve functioning by providing psychosocial rehabilitation services.
Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) is a treatment method devised to improve the lives of disabled individuals. Our goal at Positive Transformations Health Services is to teach emotional, cognitive, and social skills to help those diagnosed with mental illnesses live and work in their communities independently.
Our skilled professionals provide rehabilitation and support services to develop social skills, boost community involvement, and establish support networks. This program also helps our clients develop daily living skills to benefit them in home, work, school, and community settings. We’ve made this service available for children, teens, and adults in the community.
No matter what form psychosocial services take, the main objectives include helping people feel:
- Hopeful: People may be left feeling demoralized as a result of their condition. Rehabilitation concentrates on helping clients feel hopeful about the future.
- Empowered: Each individual needs to feel that they can set their own goals and have the power and autonomy to pursue their aims.
- Skilled: Rehabilitation helps teach people skills to help them manage their condition and live the life they want to live. This includes living skills, social skills, work skills, and others.
- Supported: Mental health professionals should offer support and help clients build relationships and social connections in their community.
Several key principles of psychosocial rehabilitation help guide how mental health specialists conduct their work. They acknowledge that:
- All people have potential that can be developed. People have a right to self-determination. They focus on a person’s strengths rather than their symptoms.
- Each person’s needs are different. Professional services should be committed and should take place in a normalized environment.
- There is a focus on a social model of care (as opposed to a medical model).
- It is centered on the present rather than fixated on the past.
Many people can benefit from psychosocial rehabilitation. However, not all people with mental illness need PSR. For some people, therapy, medication, or a combination of the two treatments may be sufficient to restore functioning. Rehabilitation is useful when people need further assistance to help them recover functioning.
